Fans of the Shelby family can rejoice as Netflix has officially announced a feature film adaptation of “Peaky Blinders,” with Oscar winner Cillian Murphy reprising his role as the iconic Tommy Shelby, according to Deadline. This long-awaited confirmation follows years of speculation and teases, providing a much-anticipated reason for celebration among the show’s dedicated audience. Tom Harper, known for directing “Heart of Stone,” “The Aeronauts,” and “War & Peace,” will helm the project. Harper is familiar with the “Peaky Blinders” universe, having directed the latter half of the show’s first season. Production is expected to commence later this year, with a script penned by series creator Steven Knight.
In March, Knight confirmed to Birmingham World that the film was progressing with Murphy on board. While he had previously suggested the possibility of a movie in various interviews, this marks the first official studio confirmation. Though specific plot details and additional casting information remain undisclosed, Knight has hinted that the story will unfold during World War II, promising an intense new chapter for the Shelby family.
Murphy shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of ‘Peaky Blinders.’ This is one for the fans.” Harper echoed these sentiments, reflecting on his initial involvement with the series. He remarked, “When I first directed ‘Peaky Blinders’ over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something explosive in the cast and the writing. ‘Peaky’ has always been a story about family, and it’s incredibly exciting to reunite with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences worldwide on Netflix.”
