‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Prequel Series Expands Cast as Filming Commences

Production has officially kicked off in Miami for the highly anticipated “Dexter” prequel series, “Dexter: Original Sin,” on Paramount+ with Showtime. The show welcomes four new series regulars: James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson. They join previously announced cast members Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, and Molly Brown.

Set in 1991, the series takes place 15 years before the original “Dexter.” According to the official synopsis, the storyline centers on a young Dexter (Gibson) as he evolves from a student into a vigilante serial killer. Guided by his father, Harry (Slater), Dexter learns to manage his dark impulses by targeting those who deserve to be removed from society, all while avoiding law enforcement detection. This proves especially challenging as Dexter begins his forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department. Brown will portray Dexter’s sister, Debra Morgan.

Martinez will take on the role of Angel Batista, an aspiring homicide detective driven by his emotions. Milian is set to play Maria LaGuerta, Miami Metro’s first female homicide detective. Shimizu will portray Vince Masuka, a forensic analyst who is eager to share his knowledge and enjoys supervising his new intern, Dexter. Wilson will play Bobby Watt, Harry’s long-time partner and confidant.

Fans will remember David Zayas, Lauren Vélez, and C. S. Lee as the original Batista, LaGuerta, and Masuka, respectively, with Bobby Watt being an entirely new character. Martinez is recognized for his work in “Love, Victor,” “Wolf Pack,” and “House of Cards,” among others, and is represented by Artists & Representatives and Sweet 180.

Milian, a prominent singer and songwriter, has also starred in “Step Up: High Water,” “Soundtrack,” and “The Oath,” in addition to films like “Be Cool.” She is represented by UTA, Neon Kite, and Goodman Genow. Shimizu, known for his role in “The Blacklist” and upcoming series “Interior Chinatown,” is represented by The Rosenzweig Group. Wilson’s credits include “Good Girls,” “Mike & Molly,” and the “Transformers” franchise. He is represented by Buchwald and More/Medavoy Management.

Clyde Phillips, the original showrunner and executive producer of “Dexter,” returns for “Original Sin.” Michael C. Hall, the star of the original series, also serves as an executive producer alongside Scott Reynolds, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns. Michael Lehmann, known for directing “Heathers,” will direct and executive produce. Robert Lloyd Lewis is producing, while Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios handle production. Gary Levine and Urooj Sharif will oversee for Showtime Studios, with Tara Power supervising production. The series will be distributed internationally by Paramount Global Content Distribution, excluding Paramount+ markets.
