James Gunn Expands the Daily Planet Roster

James Gunn has been hard at work filling out the newsroom of the Daily Planet. Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald are the latest additions to the cast of Gunn’s Superman film, the first project from the newly established DC Studios.

Currently being filmed in Atlanta, the movie stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, the intrepid reporter for the Daily Planet.

The newsroom itself will also see more familiar faces. Earlier reports revealed that former Saturday Night Live cast member Beck Bennett has been cast as Steve Lombardo, a brash and self-serving journalist who often contrasts sharply with the virtuous Clark Kent.

Sources indicate that Hoover will take on the role of Cat Grant, the gossip columnist from the comics known for her interest in Clark Kent. The character, created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway, has been featured in multiple TV adaptations, most notably portrayed by Calista Flockhart in CW’s Supergirl.

McDonald will play Ron Troupe, one of the top reporters in the newsroom. In the comics, created by Ordway and Tom Grummett, Troupe is known for his journalistic integrity and eventually fathers a child with Lois Lane’s sister, Lucy Lane.

Scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, Superman also features Nicholas Hoult as the villain Lex Luthor. The film will include classic characters from Superman’s world, such as Jimmy Olsen (played by Skyler Gisondo), Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio), and Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet (Wendell Pierce).

In addition to the main cast, the film will showcase several DC heroes: Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.

Hoover is a frequent collaborator in Gunn’s projects, with appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and The Belko Experiment, as well as the Netflix romantic comedy Love Hard. McDonald, on the other hand, is making his screen debut with this role.
