Channing Tatum recently revealed to ComicBook.com, while promoting his upcoming film Fly Me to the Moon, that he remains keen on making 23 Jump Street alongside Jonah Hill. This film would be the follow-up to their successful R-rated comedies 21 Jump Street (2012) and 22 Jump Street (2014).
Sony Pictures officially began developing a third installment in September 2014, with Rodney Rothman, the writer of 22 Jump Street, returning to draft the script. Later, during the infamous Sony hack, it emerged that 23 Jump Street was intended as a crossover with the Men in Black franchise. By March 2016, Variety reported that director James Bobin was attached to the project, but it ultimately stalled.
“There is a project that was written, and it’s still the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie,” Tatum shared about the 23 Jump Street script. He noted that despite their efforts, the sequel hasn’t been made due to “a lot of bureaucracy, kind of above the line stuff. It’s really hard to get it made and we’ve been trying to get it done.”
Tatum continued, “You know what, I’m going to put some good juju out there and say I would love to see ’23 Jump Street.’ I would love to do it with Jonah, and Jonah I know wants to do it. We would love to just get to go play again.”
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, 21 Jump Street grossed $200 million worldwide in 2012. Its 2014 sequel, 22 Jump Street, was even more successful, earning $331 million globally.
